EDIT: 9/4/2020 – We sent out the initial invitations yesterday, and we’re already getting confirmations and interest from some very well-known conference speakers. We’ll announce those as soon as they’re confirmed. We’ve also had two people respond who didn’t notice that this event is next year, not in 2020 – so that’s worth clarifying.
EDIT: 8/30/2020 – In exploring the costs for both venues and boats, we’ve found there’s a substantial premium charged for weekends, vs. weekdays. So we’re thinking we may change the event to 2 consecutive weekdays (Tue/Wed, Wed/Thu) instead. We’ll keep you posted here.
Steve Gerencser and I have been working on putting together an event next year – around the beginning of September, 2021, down in Baja California – sponsored by MentorsOnTap. The exact date isn’t set yet, but we’re tentatively planning on a Friday-Saturday of either the third & fourth or tenth & eleventh of September. it promises to be productive – and fun.
In a nutshell, we’re talking about a 1-day conference, with 4 to 6 speakers, then a dinner/drinks get-together in the evening. For those interested, there’ll be a deep-sea fishing trip the following day. For the folks interested only in the meet-up, the cost will be minimal – only what it takes to cover the venue. The cost for the conference will depend upon the headcount and how we’ll handle dinner/drinks remains to be decided. There’s no intention of making any money off this event – we just want to cover the costs, which should be minimal.
There’s cross-border Uber, Lyft, and taxi service available to get across the border and to the venue, for people who don’t want to drive, and if anyone wants to come in the day before or stay over, we’ll be happy to coordinate lodging for you.
This isn’t intended to be just a social gathering – we’re talking to some heavy-hitter speakers, well-known to all of us. (We should be announcing those speakers before long!)
On the second day, we’re planning on taking a charter boat out of Ensenada, Baja California, for about a 15-hr. trip, 40-50 miles off-shore. Because of limitations in the headcount allowed by the charter boats, reservations for the trip will be on a first-come, first-served basis.
Depending upon how many folks sign up for the fishing trip, we’ll likely be on either a 36-footer or 50-footer. We’ll be going after amberjack, barracuda, mahi-mahi, yellow-fin and blue-fin tuna, marlin, wahoo, grouper, yellowtail… there are still plenty of big gamefish to be had out there.
If you think you’re interested, please let us know soon, so we can start planning to reserve the boat. That’s sport-fishing season, so we need to get our reservation in as soon as possible. Once we’ve nailed down a date and headcount, we’ll have to pay a deposit. The total cost for the trip is expected to be around $150/head, which will include the fishing license, all tackle, lures, and bait, as well as lunch.
We’re also planning to have some very respectable prizes to make it more interesting.
